New Statesman writers and guest contributors—including Jonathan Franzen, Jacqueline Rose, Marina Warner, and Slavoj Žižek—have selected their favourite books of the year. Among Jason Cowley’s Books of the Year 2025 is Inflation Is About More Than Money (London Publishing Partnership) by Brian Griffiths.

Cowley describes the book as fascinating. For Griffiths, a Christian thinker, inflation is “at heart deceit—it is theft by another name, and it produces a culture of deceit.”

What might otherwise have been a dry work of economic history is elevated by the author’s concern with moral philosophy and social cohesion, resulting in a study that is unexpectedly profound.
