Alek Popov

Alek Popov

Bio:

Alek is the prize-winning author of widely translated novels and collections of short stories for which he has received numerous awards including the Elias Canetti Prize 2007, the Helikon Prize 2002, and the National Drama Award Ivan Radoev.

Born in Sofia in 1966, he is one of the most interesting writers of the current slavic literary scene. The encounter/clash between East and West, between European rich countries and the countries of the former Soviet bloc is one of the constant themes in his novels, always depicted with irony and acumen.

Attractive twins Kara and Jara join the fighters against fascism. Because of their middle-class origins, however, they are suspected of being traitors. On the run they are separated and only meet each other by chance years later, but Jara has switched sides ...
Popov disrespectfully mixes a cocktail of adventurous fights, destroyed utopias and tragicomic heroes, of tension, wit and absurdity, so that in the end no -ideological- stone is left standing.
A wild political satire about the heroic partisans of World War II that will delight fans of black humor.

2010 comedy film directed by Dimitar Mitovski and starring Alan Ford, Lee Nicholas Harris and Ralph Brown.

The new Bulgarian ambassador to London is determined to satisfy the whims of his bosses at all costs. Putting himself at the mercy of a shady PR-agency, he is promised direct access to the very highest social circles. Meanwhile, on the lower levels of the embassy, things are not as they should be. With criminal gangs operating in the kitchens, police on the trail of missing ducks from Richmond Park and a sexy Princess Diana impersonator employed as the cleaner, how is an ambassador supposed to do his job? Combining the themes of corruption, confusion, and outright incompetence, Popov masterly brings together the multiple plot lines in a sumptuous carnival of frenzy and futile vanity, allowing the illusions and delusions of the post-communist society to be reflected in their glorious absurdity!
