DESCRIPTION:
“I was Lorca’s last love and, perhaps, the reason for his death.”
With this striking opening, Los amores oscuros tells the story of Federico García Lorca’s final love affair, bringing to light a relationship that may have influenced the poet’s decision to remain in Spain despite the growing danger surrounding him.
Set in the politically charged atmosphere of 1930s Madrid, the novel portrays Lorca at the height of his artistic success. Yet it is his relationship with a young man who returns his feelings with maturity and devotion that brings him a deeper sense of personal fulfilment. As their love grows, Lorca introduces his companion to his circle of friends and fellow artists, including Rafael Alberti, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Vicente Aleixandre and Miguel Hernández, as well as influential women in Madrid’s cultural life.
The happiness they find together unfolds against a society increasingly divided by political and social conflict. As Spain moves towards catastrophe, their private world becomes ever more vulnerable to the forces gathering around them.
Combining historical research with the emotional power of fiction, Los amores oscuros offers an intimate portrait of one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated poets. It is a novel about love and courage, the constraints imposed by society, and the lives that history leaves in the shadows.
