DESCRIPTION:
Growing vegetables naturally means taking care of the environment.
The conscious horticulturist adopts non-polluting cultivation techniques, regards the agricultural soil as a living substrate from which to obtain food, takes care to preserve natural resources, works to safeguard biodiversity, takes action to recover and spread the seeds of local ancient varieties, creates places of socialization where ideas aimed at cultivating can be compared, just to make an example the increasingly widespread good practice of "shared city gardens".
Aimed in particular at the "young horticulturists" in their first experience and more generally at all enthusiasts who wish to cultivate with greater environmental awareness, this books is a clear introductory guide to the use of natural and effective practices to produce healthy food of high biological value.
The first part of the book gives general principles of natural horticulture as to use at its best the vegetables intercropping, preparing crop rotation, making and keeping the soil fertile, establishing how much water plants need and how to distribute it, identifying the most effective ecological treatment for the defense of vegetables from parasites, preparing the seedbed, choosing the time for sowing and transplanting, transforming the balcony or terrace into a vegetable garden.
The second part is structured in cards with local common names, a bit of history, indications for the choice of varieties, suggestions for cultivation (tillage, planting, harvesting, protection from parasites), pedo-climatic needs (soil character, optimum temperatures for germination and development), information on salutary and culinary properties.
Each card is completed by tables, diagrams and photographs.
